The Veterinary Technology program at Lamar Community College offers a comprehensive education designed to prepare students for rewarding careers as veterinary technicians. This program typically involves a two-year Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and blends classroom instruction with significant hands-on experience. Students will learn essential skills in animal handling and restraint, administering medications, assisting in surgeries, performing laboratory tests, taking radiographs, and providing compassionate nursing care. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including animal anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, anesthesia, surgical preparation, and disease prevention. A key component of the program is the clinical experience, where students gain valuable real-world skills through externships at veterinary clinics and other animal care facilities. Upon successful completion of the program and passing the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), graduates are eligible to become Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), opening doors to employment in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, research facilities, zoos, and other animal-related organizations.
