The Veterinary Technology program at Advantage Technical College provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become vital members of a veterinary healthcare team. Typically a two-year program leading to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, students delve into a comprehensive curriculum covering topics such as animal anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, surgical assisting, laboratory diagnostics, and radiology. A key component of the program is hands-on experience, often acquired through on-campus simulated clinic settings and required externships at local veterinary clinics, animal shelters, or research facilities. Students learn to assist veterinarians in a variety of procedures, including administering medications, preparing animals for surgery, taking radiographs, and providing patient care. Graduates are prepared to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and, upon passing and meeting state requirements, become certified or licensed veterinary technicians. Career paths include working in small animal practices, large animal practices, emergency veterinary clinics, research laboratories, zoos, and animal shelters.
