The Veterinary Technician program at Southeastern Illinois College (SIC) aims to prepare students for a rewarding career as vital members of the veterinary healthcare team. This program offers a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on training, designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist veterinarians in providing comprehensive animal care. Students can expect to learn about animal anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, surgical assisting, radiology, laboratory procedures, and client communication. Through lectures, laboratory exercises, and clinical experiences, students will develop proficiency in crucial skills, such as administering medications, performing diagnostic tests, assisting in surgery, and providing compassionate care to animals. Clinical externships are integrated into the curriculum, providing valuable real-world experience in veterinary clinics and animal hospitals. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), and successful completion leads to credentialing as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). Graduates can pursue careers in veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, research facilities, zoos, and animal shelters.
