The Veterinary Technician program at Joliet Junior College is designed to prepare students for a rewarding career assisting veterinarians in a variety of settings. This program typically leads to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and usually takes two years of full-time study to complete. Students learn essential skills such as animal handling, diagnostic imaging, surgical preparation and assistance, laboratory procedures, and client communication. Coursework includes in-depth study of animal anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes. A crucial component of the program is hands-on clinical experience, often gained through externships at local veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, and shelters. Graduates of the program are generally eligible to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), and successful completion of the VTNE exam allows graduates to become credentialed as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT). Career paths for CVTs include working in private veterinary practices (small animal, large animal, or mixed animal), emergency animal hospitals, research facilities, zoos, and humane societies. The program emphasizes providing compassionate and skilled care to animals and working as an integral member of the veterinary healthcare team.
